Muay Thai, also known as Thai Boxing, is the martial art and national sport of Thailand. It’s origins were laid down hundreds of years ago and was developed as a form of close combat that uses the entire body as a defensive weapon.

Why Learn Muay Thai at Dragons Gym?

Under the expert instruction of Kru John Barwell, your journey into Thai Boxing will give you:

A fantastic cardio workout
Being both aerobic and anaerobic, Muay Thai Boxing puts great demands on your cardiovascular system - the more you train, the fitter you will become.

Increased core strength
The rotational movements involved in Thai Boxing, together with striking, defensive and clinching movements contribute to help develop excellent core body strength.

Relief from stress
A session at Dragons Muay Thai gym is a fantastic stress-buster, the perfect place to take out your pent-up frustrations in a controlled yet energetic environment.

The ability to protect yourself
Muay Thai is a highly effective martial art. The skills and strengths in punching and kicking that you will learn in Thai boxing bouts will enable you to quickly neutralise an attacker whilst you make a safe exit from the situation.

Enhanced Self-Confidence
Dragons Muay Thai will develop your physical and mental confidence. As you feel your fitness and strength increase, and you learn the effective defensive techniques, you will feel these benefits in all areas of your life. It’s particularly beneficial for children who need a confidence boost, and our Flying Dragons sessions put the foundations in place from only 5-years-old.

Training with Kru John Barwell

John started his martial arts journey whilst still at primary school, learning Ju-jitsu and the Taekwondo under Master Shin at Stretford Sports Centre. When he entered secondary school John discovered Muay Thai as an effective method to deal with bullying and increase confidence.

Kru John quickly realized that some of the stigma attached to Thai boxing was not so deserving and, he saw a softer and controlled side to the  sport. After deciding that he wanted to share his knowledge, he completed the S.I.M.T.A grading syllabus and after 3 1/2 years of training became a qualified instructor.

Kru John trained and taught for a number years in the North West before moving to Thailand in 2007. He lived in Thailand for just over 10 years during which time he trained at Jitti's Gym, Sasiprapa's Gym, Fairtex's Gym and Jaroenthong's Gym.

Kru John has a deep understanding of all aspect of Muay Thai and is a highly experienced and empathetic teacher of all ages and experience levels.
